Dr. Gary,
I, too, searched for a humane way to get rid of rodents, without poisons, or anything that would be harmful to other animals. What I found on Amazon was a wonderful trap called the Rodent Terminator, that's battery powered and uses "a heart-stopping electric shock" to kill rodents. It can be used indoors or outside, which is where I use it. It's designed to be safe around pets and children (they would receive a harmless mild shock). It's also designed so that birds don't go into it, which is important to me since I use it outside, and have bird feeders in my yard. My problem was a rat that took up residence in my yard last summer. The third day after I set up the trap, I caught the rat. I have left the trap in the yard since then, and it catches any mice not caught by cats and raptors. And I haven't seen any more rats in the yard since. It costs about $45, and for me was well worth it. I highly recommend it.
