A listener in California asks Dr. Gary Weitzman about the use of anesthesia when cleaning her cat’s teeth. A dog in Washington, D.C., has an aversion to dry food. And a rescue canine, also in the District of Columbia, has anxiety problems.

Have you recommended the "pumpkin diet'? My vet put my yellow lab on it. It is a mixture of pumpkin, rice and either liver or chicken. The dogs love it, it is easy to digest, and the cats love it as well.
There also is my "sick kitty" formula formula - baby rice cereal, baby meat, and plain yogart. I use Stoneyfield, but any brand could be used; avoid the brands with high fructose corn syrup. The yogart is the liquid. Mix up a small quanity. It does work and was approved by my vet. I rescued a kitten from the shelter who weighed 1/2 lb. She was a 3 month old calico, one eye was swollen shut, and the other was infected. She was going to be put down as unadoptable. I picked her up on Friday right before the shelter closed and after my vet had left for the day. By Monday morning when she saw my vet she had weighed 3/4 of a pound. A combination of albin solution, sick kitty food, and a yellow lab who fostered her turned her into a beautiful 11 pound calico with two bright green eyes. I have used this on all the sick cats that I have taken in.
